3 Critical Areas

There are three critical areas to consider when making a career change. This guidance is from a Talent Acquisition and Executive Search perspective.

Defining Your Market Value

The industry, function, and scope of your work over the last 3 to 5 years will generate the highest degree of interest and compensation value from potential employers:

  • The closer you stay to that center - industry, function, and scope – the more interest you will find; with a greater probability of getting the job, and the compensation will be higher.

  • The further away you move from that center…the less you will see.

Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile & Resume

Your LinkedIn Profile, not your resume, is what talent acquisition will use to source and screen you as a candidate for job opportunities. They will use LinkedIn to determine if they will talk to you.

Why? LinkedIn Recruiter is the primary sourcing tool talent acquisition professionals use to find the people they seek.

  • Your LinkedIn profile must effectively communicate your ‘market value’ at the top of the page.

  • The experience section should summarize your functional experience by company, with less detail the further back you go.

  • Employers want to know what you have done lately!

Interview Prep & Follow-Up

Preparation

  • The day before the interview, send them an email asking if there is anything specific they would like you to be prepared to talk about, how much time you will have, and who will participate in the interview.

  • This will allow you to prepare and focus on what is most important to them.

Follow-up

  • After the interview, send them a brief email thanking them for their time.

  • In bullet format, describe 2 or 3 things about the role and your background that make you a great fit.

  • Close the note by letting them know you want to move to the next step.
